IoT Home Automation Project with SMS and Email Alerts



This presentation represents a connected home with smart devices. Nowadays, homes are connected with all their devices and providing access to a variety of new services and information. This template can be used in presentations related to technology and presentations related to home automation or Smart Home Systems based on Internet of Things, or the concept of intelligent, near-zero energy, building.


In this design, we present a Home Automation System using telephone lines. The system consists of two subsystems. One is the Remote Control system. The other one is the Phone Monitoring system. The Remote Control system used the Dual Tone Multi-frequency signals to control the operations of various appliances. The hardware and software are designed based on the standard telephone system. The Phone Monitoring system provides convenient services for the user to better monitoring the usage of their phones. Experimental results show that the two subsystems provide better home services and living quality for modern lives. INTRODUCTION Most often, the users would like to have remote control on some preliminary operations of their home appliances before they go back to home. These operations may be the turn on or off the air conditioner, the cooker, the light, the video, or the security system, or even some things that he or she forgot to do before leaving, etc. It will be comfortable and convenient for people to live in such a modern house with the above functions. Besides, phone is an important bridge of two parties. Sometimes it is important to keep the information of conversations to protect the family. In this case, it is useful to have extra functions to monitor the usage of phones. These functions include automatic warning and recording. The above needs bring up the idea of Home Automation in modern lives. That includes two major parts. One is the RC (Remote Control) system. The other is the PM (Phone Monitoring) system. Both applications introduced, were designed based on the standard telephone system. This means that the above systems can be installed for public use widely. Both systems were designed based on the DTMF (Dual Tone Multi-frequency) signals that are produced by the telephone system. The DTMF signals were sent from the user end to the destination end. The RC system detects the number of phone ring and a set of defined codes to determine if a remote control signal has been sent out to control the operation of target appliance. If the control signal is confirmed by the system, the system will send out a control signal to initiate the operation of the appliance. The PM system will send out a warning signal and automatically record the content of the Conversation if it detects an in or out call of the phone. In this design, we will discuss the design of the Home Automation system using a standard DTMF phone system.The code is written in assembly language in AT89c2051 microcontroller and is compiled through the compiler Kiel software.

Smart home technology, also often referred to as home automation or domotics (from the Latin "domus" meaning home), provides homeowners security, comfort, convenience and energy efficiency by allowing them to control smart devices, often by a smart home app on their smartphone or other networked device. A part of the internet of things (IoT), smart home systems and devices often operate together, sharing consumer usage data among themselves and automating actions based on the homeowners' preferences.


One of the most touted benefits of home automation is providing peace of mind to homeowners, allowing them to monitor their homes remotely, countering dangers such as a forgotten coffee maker left on or a front door left unlocked.


Home automation also helps consumers improve efficiency. Instead of leaving the air conditioning on all day, a smart home system can learn behaviors and make sure the house is cooled down by the time homeowners arrive home from work. The same goes for appliances. With a smart irrigation system, the lawn will only be watered when needed and with the exact amount of water necessary. With home automation, energy, water and other resources are used more efficiently, which helps save both natural resources and money for the consumer.


However, home automation systems have struggled to become mainstream, in part due to their technical nature. A drawback of smart homes is their perceived complexity; some people have difficulty with technology or will give up on it with the first inconvenience. Smart home manufacturers and alliances are working on reducing complexity and improving the user experience to make it enjoyable and beneficial for users of all types and technical levels.

For home automation systems to be truly effective, devices must be interoperable regardless of manufacturer, and use the same protocol or, at least, complementary ones. As it is a relatively new market, there is no gold standard for home automation yet. However, standard alliances are partnering with manufacturers and protocols to ensure interoperability and a seamless user experience.


Zigbee and Z-Wave are two of the most common home automation communications protocols in use today. Both use mesh network technologies, short-range, low-power radio signals to connect smart home systems. Though both target the same smart home applications, Z-Wave has a range of 30 meters to Zigbee's 10 meters, with Zigbee often perceived as the more complex of the two. Zigbee chips are available from multiple companies, while Z-Wave chips are only available from Sigma Designs.


A smart home is not a collection of disparate smart devices and appliances, but ones that work together
